Broadcast Video Expo 2013

This year’s BVE show was the first to be located at it’s new home of the Excel Centre in London’s east end. The venue was much bigger in scale than Earl’s Court and had many more facilities in place for visitors and exhibitors alike. The added capacity meant there were 54 first time exhibitors which pushed the total to over 350 from both the UK and internationally.

Great information was on hand from leading industry experts, such as Cinematographer Geoff Boyle in the 3D/4K cinema showing a short film shot entirely on the Canon C500 (+ external recorder) in RAW 4K with superb information on grading using post production tools such as Da Vinci Resolve. Opinions varied on whether 4K is a relevant tool for immediate projects, considering pros and cons such as future proofing, costs, media management, archiving etc, but all in attendance agreed that Geoff’s work is outstanding and enriched by having 4K at his disposal.

On the subject of Post, there was also informative talks in the Post Production Theatre area and a highlights being from speakers such as Donna Mulvey-Jones, Head of Post Production from Maverick Television, on the pitfalls a project can encounter in a tapeless workflow. Planning your workflow can not be ignored and every project could have a different solution depending on time, budget, availability and experience needed. Also instigating as much work ‘in house’ as possible such as duplication, off line editing, viewing and logging can be a real cost saver for any production. The viewing aspect has become easier with the rise of tapeless workflows which helps to avoid having to deliver stacks of tape copies to a producer for viewing.

Great stands were on show this year with lighting products from such companies as Gekko and Dedo (with products used in the Lighting on the Run seminar from DOP Jonathan Harrison, pulling a huge crowd as always!). Interesting demonstrations of the robustness of compact flash cards from Sandisk with the use of a water tank on the stand and some seriously soaked CF cards!

BVE-2013-H900_250pxNew Sony kit!

CVP showed a vast array of kit for sale and backing onto the Sony stand gave the perfect opportunity to showcase new kit such as the Sony BRC-H900 remote head camera which, through the hugely improved sensor, has become a great new acquisition for Shooting Partners this year and is currently shooting a new show for Channel 4 in contributors homes up and down the UK. This has proved a great advantage for the production as shooting in Britain’s living rooms is sometimes very tight for space!

It was great to see other Shooting Partners kit in action too as we bumped into a crew shooting an exhibition highlights package with one of our Canon C300 kits on the exhibitor’s floor. The camera of choice was perfect for such an event as the often tight spaces either between or inside a stand can really be enriched by a narrow depth of field. We look forward to seeing the completed piece and the crew looked really happy with the kit!!

Shooting Partners have strong links with exhibitions and events as project management team for the International Broadcast Convention (IBC) which is held in September every year at the RAI Centre in Amsterdam.
