IBC 2012

2012 saw another great year for the International Broadcast Convention in Amsterdam, with a key note speech from Black Eyed Peas star will.i.am to boot!

A lot of focus was placed on 4K recording and displays this year with innovative products from Canon and Sony among many others.

Sony PMW-150

Sony announced the PMW-150 which is a XDCAM HD 422 Compact Solid State Handheld Camcorder

With 3 x 1/3” CMOS sensors, fixed lens and 50Mbps recording as a compliment to Sony’s PMW-100 & PMW-200 cameras. The Sony FS-100 is still being pushed for 4K production and affordable slow motion shooting.

Sony PMW-50

An interesting product for those who use minicams and trust in the Sony SxS workflow was the lightweight, battery operated and compact dual SxS field recorder called the PMW-50.

This unit is perfect for attaching to small HD camera heads and should be available in January 2013.

 Sony MK3

Sony also showed a HD minicam to rival the dominant GoPro system labelled the MK3. The camera has a waterproof casing and various grip options similar to a GoPro but with higher quality recording and a data screen rather than LCD monitor option, but there was talk of two models, one of which having a WiFi connection.

New Sony SxS card reader with USB3

Another step forward for Sony’s SxS card system was the introduction of a new card reader called the SBAC_US20 which features USB 3 transfers without the need for a separate power supply. This should make a big difference to transfers in the field.

 Canon EOS C-100

Canon showed the EOS-C100 camera with great uses for non-broadcast projects and the EOS C500 for 4K cinema style recordings. Some short films shot on the EOS C500 were screened in the RAI center’s D-Cinema that were simply stunning!

Lower cost Litepanels

Litepanels introduce a more budget friendly version of their massively popular product but minus the Bi-Colour and DMX control options. If you are a user who doesn’t use multiple litepanels or are more than happy to slide in colour correction gels then this poses a cost saving. Units will be available from the end of September 2012.

Seminars and information

There were many interesting and informative presentations at IBC 2012 including a Dolby 3D screening of the movie Prometheus and practical talks from leading location cameramen such as Mark Moreve on the Canon stand talking about using the popular XF305 out in the field.
