NAB Show® is the world’s largest electronic media show covering filmed entertainment and the development, management and delivery of content across all mediums.

4K acquisition and post production work flow was a major theme at this year’s show. Major manufacturers such as Panasonic and AJA joined the 4K camera market with announcements on new camera systems as well as new approaches from Sony, Canon, Black Magic Design and Grass Valley.

A huge buzz was created at the show surrounding AJA’s 4K CION camera system. The camera appeared to be based around the KI PRO AJA product series and produced stunning picture quality to the HD monitors on the stand. Decisions would have to be made by each user on monitoring as there is no viewfinder planned for release with this camera.

PDW850_250pxSony F5 to F55 upgrade plus XDCAM products

Sony released information on an upgrade path for F5 users enabling a conversion to F55 spec. Exciting news for those considering trading in an F5 to upgrade whether to an F55 or perhaps an ARRI Amira.

There was also surprise news of a new XDCAM optical disc camera in the form of the PDW-850. The PDW-850, successor of the very popular PDW-700 and PDW-F800, is equipped with the latest Power HAD FX CCD sensors and records HD and SD formats including MPEG HD 422 50 Mbps on to ready-to-archive and robust Professional Disc media with a high sensitivity of F12 at 50i.

The camcorder weighs only 4.2 kg (body only), lighter than the PDW-700, and has lower power consumption compared to its predecessors. The PDW-850 can also be configured in a live production system by docking the CA-FB70 fibre adapter or CA-TX70 digital triax adapter CA-TX70 to the standard 50-pin interface.

The progression towards more auto features on Canon’s ubiquitous C300, including auto focus, was well received and should prove to be of great benefit to self shooters.

Canon followed up with a truly superb CINE-SERVO 17-120mm T2.95 Zoom Lens. Featuring 4K Optical Performance, a Dynamic 17-120mm Focal Length Range, and Removable Digital Drive Unit for Cine-Style or Shoulder-Mounted Operation.The XF205 is a superb addition to the range with a great list of specs below:

Varicam35_250pxPanasonic new Varicam 35 and HS

Panasonic joined the 4K race with not just one, but two outstanding solutions for shooting either 35mm sensor projects or high speed ENG style shoots. Owners of the new Varicam systems can swap between large sensor PL mount front end or B4 mount 2/3″.

The new camera’s superb image handling in multiple formats including 4K, UHD, 2K and HD make it an unparalleled tool for high-end filmmaking, and commercials and episodic production as well as live 4K events.

With its innovative design, the 4K camera module unit (AU-V35C1) is separate but dockable to the recording module unit (AU-VREC1), which is also interchangeable with Panasonic’s new 2/3” camera module unit (AU-V23HS1) (see separate news release). This system flexibility can be expanded with an umbilical cable between the s35mm 4K camera and the AVC-ULTRA recorder, providing “box” camera functionality for jibs, cranes and other “remote” camera needs. This common recorder module is also interchangeable with Panasonic’s new 2/3” 1080p camera, enabling professionals to switch between s35mm and 2/3” camera heads to best suit their creative needs.

The Black Magic Design stand was one of the most popular stands of NAB 2014 with a massive array of products on show. The 4K URSA camera (with full DaVinci Resolve 11 software) caused quite a stir and divided opinions!
