PROJECTING - ON ICE
The challenge was to project a giant perfectly edge blended video image 100 feet x 50 feet from a height of 12 metres onto an ICE RINK surface. To put this into perspective the area is about 6 times the size of the screen in the ODEON Leicester Square.
Dancing on Ice, ITV’s most watched, award winning, live entertainment series returned to the George Lucas Stage at Elstree Studios January and Anna Valley was chosen by ITV to supply projection, a 6mm high resolution LED and flat screen displays.
Working closely with Lighting Director Dave Davey, Anna Valley Display technicians deployed 8 x Christie Roadstar Projectors configured as 4 stacked pairs edge blended, both horizontally and vertically, to produce the huge image. Each projector was fitted with an HD lens delivering a significantly brighter image.
The entire set and ice rink is transformed during each element of the show by Dave Davey’s lighting, with all patterns and artwork supplied to the 8 projectors via a Hippotyser.
Award winning Series Director Paul Kirrage said, “ The Projection we have this year gives added depth and more intense colour to the images on the ice. Dave and I have been using the 8 DLP projectors to complement the costumes and change the mood of the 12 routines in each of our shows. Right down to painting a red carpet onto the ice for the competitors to skate along.”
