Sony PMW-F5 evaluation by Mark Moreve

Shooting Partners teamed up with Director of Photography and camera expert Mark Moreve for an evaluation of the new Sony PMW-F5. Here are Mark’s thoughts:

Having been lent a Sony F5 camera with Angenieux lenses by Shooting Partners. I headed off to my local high street with one of their fantastic staff location camera assistants.

I spent about an hour filming the wildlife by the river & getting to grips with a new camera.

This is a compressed version of the original footage but I must say I’m impressed with the image quality from this camera & also as a Camera Operator it’s lovely to have a good quality viewfinder to work with. It really helps to have your eye against the camera when filming, concentrating the mind.

Angenieux-16-42_150pxAs you would expect the Angenieux lenses (16-42 & 30-80 T2.8) offer great edge to edge sharpness, superb build & interoperability & I couldn’t see any breathing whilst focus pulling. It would be nice to have a bit of a longer throw on the lenses but they are very compact, so a bit of a trade off there. I’d like to try the Canon 30 – 105 T2.8 lens on this camera though.

I used the Abel Cine AB Highlight set up which you can download & install on the camera as I wanted to retain as much highlight detail as possible but I do feel though for some reason this added a fair amount of magenta to the images. This may have been added though as I shot at 6400 Kelvin as I wanted warmth in the images as the day was fairly overcast. When the sun did come out it was really lovely, I like the image of the swan coming out of the highlights & the way the camera dealt with the white feathers on the swan’s back.

PMW-F5_150pxOverall this camera offers very strong images which I feel have that Sony XDcam HD look about them with the added advantage of a Super 35mm sensor so you can achieve the shallow depth of field which is so on trend at the moment & helps you as a Cameraman focus the viewers attention on the story you want to tell.

It was a real pleasure working with this camera set up & I think Shooting Partners have got it just right with their two lenses & Hawk woods battery kit packages. Thanks guys 🙂
